My Students
My school is a regular public elementary school, in Nevada, in a close-knit working-class neighborhood. My students come from a wide range of backgrounds, and face the regular challenges of making friends, family issues, fitting in, and expressing themselves. Additionally, our school is a "Beacon" school for Social, Emotional Learning. The programs we implement at our school are designed to support the emotional needs of our students and foster strong and healthy relationships between students, staff, parents and the community at large.
We find that when we treat the child as a whole being with needs and strengths, and give them opportunities to express themselves as an individual, they rise to the occasion and shine.
While our students do not typically come from wealthy backgrounds, they routinely perform at the top tier academically. Much credit for our students' success is due to a dedicated staff and the student centered and hands-on programs we implement.
My Project
Our school is planning on a possible re-opening this year during the pandemic. In order to do so safely, there are many restrictions that would be placed on students and staff when they are in the physical building. One of those factors is that students would be staying in their classrooms for the whole day, while the staff comes to them to deliver services. It is possible that my students might no longer come to the music room to sing, dance and play instruments - a great loss. But this loss can be mitigated by bringing instruments to their classrooms in a safe and efficient way. A lockable tool cart with ukulele hooks and an LCD projector would be a powerful tool for safely transporting instruments and visuals to my students so that they can experience the joy of making music, without worrying about spreading the Covid-19 virus.
