My students need a digital music player in order to increase reading fluency, decrease time used for transitions, and to implement energizing "brain breaks".

My Students
What have you learned through music? Maybe the Alphabet Song, or a Multiplication Rap? Have you ever enjoyed an audio book? Music is a proved memory aid, teaching tool, and mood enhancer. Multiple purposes for music require an efficient storage and management system of an extensive collection.
My students attend a Title I elementary school.
They are 8-9 year-old third graders. My students are eager to learn, but have many obstacles to overcome. Generational poverty has impacted many of them. Some have emotional issues, and many have attention disorders. Each day these students come to school with the "weight of the world" upon their shoulders. Many are preoccupied with anxiety about how their basic needs will be met. The lack of stability in their home environments makes it hard for them to achieve success. My students struggle most in reading. They are more productive when they listen to background music, and they LOVE energizing "dance breaks". These breaks increase oxygen flow to the brain and endorphins. Music calms my students and rejuvenates them. According to a Multiple Intelligence Self-Assessment, the majority of my students learn best through music.
Since we use music in so many different ways, we change out CDs quite often throughout the day.
My Project
This Ipod will help my students in many ways. Research shows that music helps the brain to develop, increase focus, and comprehend information. In order to use the variety of music necessary to meet all of my students' needs, I need this product to manage the collection efficiently.
Music composed at 60 beats per minute mimics the mother's heartbeat heard in the womb. As a result, 60 beats per minute is the optimum background music to use during student work time. In order to use music conducive to literacy development I use a different CD than that for mathematical problem solving, and a different CD for creative thinking.
The brain also needs breaks in order to boost energy and maintain focus. My students enjoy dance breaks with a variety of upbeat tunes to get them up and around to increase oxygen flow and productivity.
Audio is a great way to improve reading fluency. We use literature selections on CD to model fluent reading. Choral reading with the CD improves fluency.
This project is important for all of my students, but especially for the majority of my students who have ADHD and/or have suffered childhood trauma as a result of generational poverty.
In order to boost the brain and build new neurons, I must utilize my music and audio books effectively. This is an enormous task with my current CD player. An Ipod will make it possible to sort the music, play tracks from multiple albums instantly, and use interactive literacy applications.
