FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Y.'s classroom raised $263
This project is fully funded
Because I teach in a "low-wealth" district, our schools receive significantly less funding per pupil than the neighboring district located ten miles west. We have no art, general music, or P.E. teachers in our elementary schools.
So how does a second grade classroom teacher meet the state standards in math, music, and physical education within a single lesson? Folk dancing and singing games! Thanks to the New England Dance Masters and the work of renowned movement educator Phyllis Weikart, a classroom teacher like me needs only instruction manuals, accompanying Cd's, and space, and I can get my students' hearts pumping as they step and slide to the lively tunes of traditional music.
Folk dancing allows students to internalize patterning through auditory rhythms and physical movements. As an alternative to paper and pencil tests, folk dancing allows students to physically express their understanding of patterned segments and beat competency. It also helps them refine gross motor skills, challenges their memory for sequencing, and provides the opportunity for cooperation and multicultural appreciation in a school where twelve languages are spoken. Best of all, folk dancing is just plain fun.
Please consider supporting the physical, musical, and mathematical education of my students, 34% of whom qualify for free lunches and 25% of whom speak English as a second language, with a collection of instruction guides and Cd's.
Thank you for reading this proposal and if funded, we invite you to dance and play.
