Music Matter: Help Special Ed Pre-K Get Their Groove Back

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you every wanted to hear your favorite song? You find it, and place it in your CD player. Press play and you hear the opening bars and that's it. Your favorite cd is scratched and no matter how many times you clean it, it will not play. Imagine how you would feel if you're 3, 4 or 5 years old.

I have ten of the most precious, lovable, and unique students.

They have a variety of special needs, such as autism and cerebral palsy. Many of my students are learning to talk. Music is one of the best tools I have to illicit words from them. My students love music. They love to bounce, dance, and rock. Even my non- ambulatory student love moving to the beat. Music allows all my students to fully engage. My students are so full of fun and life, that their disabilities don't get in the way of their spirit and desire to learn. Our school is a high poverty, title-one school. The students all receive free breakfast and lunch. This means the majority of the families come from poverty. They need a rich classroom with music options that don't skip. Please help us get our groove back.

My Project

We need new CDs! My students learn much from music than just musical skills. They develop physical skills such as coordination, balance, and physical fitness through moving to music and participating in finger plays and songs with motions. They learn cognitive development skills. Music enhanced this area of development by teaching problem solving, thinking skills, math and spatial skills, and creativity. Singing helps my students learn to speak for my limited language students and my verbal students, music helps them speak more clearly. Music helps preschoolers develop phonetic awareness, listening skills, vocabulary, and self-expression. Music increases preschoolers social development. My preschoolers use music to learn about moods and emotions. Music allows my students to participating in music activities that teaches manners, social skills, and self-confidence. Most importantly, music help my student get their groove on teaching physical health.

Help bring music into a preschool special education classroom.

Music can ignite a passion for learning that can last a lifetime. The musical CDs will make a difference everyday in the lives of my students. We start every day with circle time and these music will replace the scratched CDs. Please help me make our circle time and music and movement experiences much more exciting and engaging for my young students with special needs.
