Music Makes Us Smarter

My students need 2 tenor saxophones for concert band and a bass guitar for jazz band.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ryans's classroom raised $1,439

My Students

My band students are very excited about playing in band. They have set a goal to perform at an adjudicated event this year, but we need more instruments. "Where there's a will there's a way," and that's why I'm asking for additional instruments. I want them to have this opportunity.

My school is a Title I school and the majority of my students receive some type of public assistance.

The school has been approved for all students to receive free lunch. My students are typically all very good students and they enjoy playing in the band. Several of my students have expressed an interest in pursuing music as a career choice. They are currently preparing to audition for all-state and solo and ensemble through the state music association. I am very pleased that my students do not let their economic status keep them from setting goals and reaching for dreams.

My Project

I currently have 40 students performing in the honor band. I'm using three tenor saxophone players but I have only one tenor saxophone. Students normally switch off on the instrument so that each student will have the opportunity to play. Two of those students are in the same class so they have to do the same thing in class. With the addition of two new tenor saxophones, each of my students will have an instrument to utilize during class and also for performances. With the addition of two new tenors we will also have the capability to go to LGPE, an adjudicated event that my students are eager to perform at. Having the bass guitar will give me the necessary equipment and instrumentation to have a performing jazz band at the middle school level also. Jazz is America's music and I believe that we need to begin early teaching our students about jazz so that this very important art form will continue to live.

This project will make a difference by allowing more of my students an opportunity to perform on an instrument.

I currently have 104 students enrolled in band; however, only 40 are in the honor band because of a lack of instruments. Three of those students are using the same instrument which means they have to share. Getting these instruments will allow each student to have his/her own instrument for use during class, for performances and to take home to practice with.
