Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Music is a universal language that all children enjoy, no matter their native language. Music lifts the spirit and brings smiles all around!

My students are predominantly Hispanic and African-American.

They are like little baby, open-mouthed birds, waiting to be fed by their mama bird. They are curious and open to new things. Our school is coming up on its centennial year and so its outside appearance doesn't reflect the energy and enthusiasm that's within. It is an inner city-school in mid-city Los Angeles, serving children in very low socioeconomic conditions.

My Project

By providing my students with an array of musical instruments, they will be able to experience firsthand the joys of making music. Shaking a maraca painted with the colors of the Mexican flag will instill in them a pride in something they can do for themselves. There is no wrong way to experiment with music! These instruments will allow those children who are struggling academically to be successful in other ways. Participating in music activities will enable me to reach all my students in a new way. I intend to teach the children about music from different parts of the world. I will begin with calypso music and use a CD to demonstrate the names and uses of each instrument. The students will learn what a musician is, the importance of practicing every day, and overall, how to have fun trying new things!

By donating these items, my students will begin their love affair with music.

Music serves as an outlet for many emotions. Anyone can hear a song on the radio and be instantly transported to a specific time and event in their life. Picking up an instrument may be the first step for my students to express themselves when they were otherwise not able. Music will give them a "voice," no matter how well they speak English.
