Music Makes Me Want to Dance

My students need 2 sets of instruments from around the world.

I teach in a high poverty Inner City school. The students have little resources available to them. There are no stores or businesses around our area to help out. We have an extremely high level of autistic children this year. I find that they respond well to music, and fit in well with the other children who also get into music.

We have not had music at our school in several years due to budget cuts. This year we found a way to get a music teacher. The children love her and she is anxious to teach them about music from other countries as part of our Multicultural Unit in Social Studies. However, we have no musical instruments except hand bells and gongs. We need to get musical instruments from other countries so the children can use them and learn about the other culture and make connections. With our high level of autistic children this year, I feel that they will respond to music and stay focused on the projects in class. I want to reach all my learners and I feel that music is one way to reach more students and get them involved in other cultures.

I found a set of instruments from around the world. It contains instruments from Ghana, Peru, Asia and Native Americans. They are listed as easy to play and diverse. I think the children will learn about these countries and their culture as they explore the music they get to make. The music teacher will help me out by teaching them simple songs to sing with the musical accompaniment of the instruments.

You can help them find out about other cultures and how they relate to our own culture through music. Bang the drum and shake the maracas for a class of students who want to hear the sounds of another culture. You can make this happen with a donation on our behalf. Thank you.
