Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students range from 6th - 8th grade. They are ethnically diverse and come from all different parts of San Diego to attend the public arts academy I teach at. My students play a wide range of instruments including: violin, viola, cello and bass (string family). Flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax and baritone sax (woodwind family). Trumpet, french horn, baritone and tuba (brass family). Also snare drum, bass drum, mallets and auxiliary percussion (percussion family). At my school, students not only learn about performing, but there is a strong character component and emphasis on the importance of getting good grades which helps mold each student to be exceptional.
My Project
I have found that the biggest gap students have in transitioning from elementary to middle school band and orchestra is their ability to read and write music. Working at an arts academy, it is expected that students entering will have some type of music literacy. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. With limited budgets and time available for students at the elementary school level, there is not always time to spend on reading and writing music. This project is aimed at bridging that gap. By providing books and music stands for students, they will be able to not only learn how to play their instruments in music class, but also how to read and write music!
