This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Music Heals & Empowers! This has been the experience of many students during the 13 years that this program has been active.
With classes based on a direct experience of music, our kids have discovered, not only the JOY of making music, but the ability of developing RESILIENCY THROUGH MUSIC.
The majority of my students come from Latino families that have immigrated to the US to provide a better life for them. These kids are probably not very different from the ones that attend other schools in the vicinity. Their families have stories of struggle, fueled with their imperious desire to improve and the parent's hope that the students can receive a good education that lifts them out of poverty.
You can find stories like this one all around this site but, for me, these are the faces and stories that have touched my life as a teacher. I have seen how many of them, through music, have felt fulfillment and enjoyed sense of belonging. I have tried to instill them sense of pride and sense of empowerment, the belief that if they are persistent and focused, they will achieve whatever goals they envision!
My Project
Music is the KEY! I am convinced that, in the current times of Social Distancing, music classes are essential to support the socio-emotional health of our students. As a their teacher, I feel I have a great responsibility to keep inspiring my students and foster their growth and learning. During the Spring Semester, I tried everything: we shared music to cope with the pandemic, we discussed the role of music in the social justice movements, we learned music theory and we even started getting acquainted with different Music Production tools and techniques. Many of these activities were very successful and helped my students, however... my students MISSED PLAYING INSTRUMENTS and our school didn't have enough instruments to distribute among them, so they could practice at home
I really believe that these KEYBOARDS will allow my students not only to continue learning and practicing music, but to GROW SOCIO-EMOTIONALLY in these difficult times.
These KEYBOARDS would help us to serve more students in our school, so they can practice at home, not only during the current Remote Learning phase, but also when we are able to go back to the classroom.
I have been running the Music Program at my school for 13 years already and I have always tried to develop a program that is really serving my community and tackles the interests and needs of the students. Throughout the years, students have been leaning more towards piano and I hope that these keyboards allow more students to practice at home and get their music skills and their emotional well-being.
They are basic but serviceable: they have enough features not only for home practice but also to connect them to a computer and work also in all the different music production activities I am envisioning for the year!
