My Students
In these challenging economic times, teachers keep getting cut and class sizes keep getting bigger. One of the ways this has impacted my students is that they have music class less frequently. Additionally, since there are more kids in each class my instruments are spread thinner.
My students are energetic, creative, and love to play instruments!
We have a very diverse population. For many of my students, my classroom is the only place they will ever have the opportunity to learn about, play, and create their own music. There are about 950 students in my school. It is a challenge to have the students perform in large groups because there are not enough instruments to go around.
My Project
The hand drums that I am requesting in this proposal will give my students increased opportunities to play and create music. We will use the drums to play percussion pieces, to create new rhythms and compositions, and integrate with literacy. I teach many activities in my music classes that begin using poetry.
Students recite the poems, internalize the words, and play the rhythms on instruments. Having more hand drums in my classroom would be an excellent way to facilitate such activities. We also use instruments to accompany stories and books. Currently when we do these activities, the students have to take turns and share drums. If we had more hand drums, we could perform some of these stories and percussion pieces for the parents.
This project will give my students more opportunities to play instruments during music class and more opportunities to perform for their parents.
I believe music is best taught using a hands-on approach and in order to provide that experience for my students, I need more drums for them to put their hand on!
