My Students
This is a diverse south Seattle school that values social justice, environmental science, and experience-based learning. We do a variety of projects to connect students' own experiences to the broader world. This includes a broad array of arts integration projects, including music. All students in 4th and 5th grade choose between a band class or a general music class.
We have English Language learners, students living in foster care, multi-generational living situations, and those who have experienced trauma.
Students have a huge range of academic achievement, with reading abilities from kindergarten to high school.
My Project
At our school, fourth and fifth grade students choose between general music class and beginning band. The school has a very limited number of instruments available for students to borrow, and priority goes to the older students. Although many students are able to rent or buy their own instruments, we have many students whose families cannot afford to do so. As a result, students living in poverty may not be able to learn an instrument.
In order to be equitable, we need more instruments to lend to students.
Research shows that music helps engage reluctant learners and forms new connections in the brain. We want to provide that opportunity to all students, especially those most impacted by poverty or trauma. We are only able to purchase a small number of instruments, but the impact will be felt by the whole band. By giving all students the chance to play an instrument, we strengthen our entire community.
These instruments will be the property of the school and will be cared for along with those we already own.
