This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students come into the music room every day with enthusiasm for making music. On days when they're extra chatty and I'm challenged to channel their energy into a good music making period, all I need to do is start playing a few chords of a song they've learned. They start to sing and the state is changed and they're making music as they start to sing.

One example that comes to mind is one from a recent in class talent show.

A student who was hesitant to engage and expose himself musically decided to sign up for the class talent show. The students all had an opportunity to prepare something and perform for their classmates. Some chose to perform; others did not. One boy got up and sang a song solo and totally commanded the room. No lessons or prior experience. It was absolutely amazing.

Most of these students do not have extra things like instruments or music lessons outside the music classroom. I would love to teach these kiddos to play this instrument to help keep music in their lives after they leave the music classroom.

My Project

When each student has a recorder, we will begin a recorder unit. I have lessons planned, and hope to have a practice session in the mornings that students can come for extra help beyond what they can accomplish during class time. For an extra wish, I'd like to have a recorder ensemble perform a few songs in our spring concert. Kids love to show off talents and by building confidence in the music room, students have the opportunity to work and practice at something that doesn't take years to master, but can feel proud of and enjoy in a relatively short time.
