Music shapes the MIND! Some of the best academics in the history of the world had strong foundations in music.
I am a 3rd grade teacher for At Risk and special education students in an urban school in Chicago.
My students come to school with a lot of emotions, things going on at home and on the streets. Even before they enter school, they are often faced with situations that can shape the outlook of their day. MUSIC.. in a moment can change a mood and create HARMONY AND PEACE in a world where it seems like there is only chaos.
Brain based research shows that music can be used to calm students and optimize learning. If my class had an Ipod, docking stations and itunes money, I could have calming classical and new age music playing from the moment the students walk in the door. Also, I would be able to expose the students to centuries of great, classical music and use music to teach other areas (Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies).
By donating to this cause, YOU will single handedly make a difference in how my students' day begins and how they learn. New curriculum and connections will be developed through music. My students will learn about classical artists and how all of the other subjects are connect through music. My goal is that EVERY period will be taught with at least one music connection. Let the learning - and dancing- begin!
