When you make learning musical, magic happens! As an early childhood Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), I know songs have the power to encourage learning, communication, and enjoyment in our youngest learners. Music involves more areas of our brains, incorporates more senses, and facilitates memory better than speech alone - that's why you can still remember the words to songs you heard decades ago!
A classroom set of ukuleles will allow each and every child in our special education classes to touch, hold, play, see, hear, and feel a real instrument however they are able - while being supported by their carefully trained teachers and paraeducators.
Children with special needs aren't always provided with the same opportunities as their typical peers. Access to real musical instruments is an area that is often overlooked.
Children learn the most, and the best, when they are encouraged to explore real items in a supportive, safe environment. With over 20 years' experience teaching music, in addition to specialized communication training as an SLP, I am uniquely qualified to combine music with language. I know children light up with joy when their favorite song is played (you've seen it, too!). They sing, they dance, they move, they communicate in so many different ways when given the opportunity.
Please join me in supporting the amazing children in our special education classrooms by helping them make magical, musical memories!
