My Students

Do you remember learning to play a musical instrument? It was exciting, it was new, it was frustrating! Now, imagine that you are 8 years old and trying to play the violin, viola or cello. Your success depends on different variables, but sharing a book or instrument shouldn't be one of them!

My very talented students attend a Title 1, Public Elementary Magnet School for the Arts.

Most of the students are from low to middle income families, and the school site is an inner-city location. The school system is under major financial restraints due to current economic conditions, and my program has no budget this year! I feel very grateful that my program is still strong. Most of the 8-year old students that attend my school have signed up to be in strings class this year! With this motivation comes the problem of not having the supplies needed to run a single class. With the donation of the these method books, I will be able to allow the children to have music that they are not sharing with another student. The books will stay in the classroom, and be used for every class. Students are able to come to my room before and after school to practice their instrument, which they do daily!

My Project

The potential of having method books for my string students is endless! Music lessons have been linked to strengthening children's' success in academic areas. Students will learn to read music notes and count rhythms. Students will learn to play songs that they can play for their families. It is the very beginning of a child's' music studies that help build their foundation for success in the future on that instrument, or other instruments. Music captures and inspires their spirit and sense of self-worth.

Students who have started strings at my school have gone on to play their stringed instrument in middle and high school orchestras.

Of the alumni of my program, 100% of the students who chose to play in college orchestras have earned full or partial scholarships to college! Some of these students are the first in their family to go to college!
