My Project
This past Summer, I attended multiple music teacher trainings to enhance my education, as well as learn some engaging tips from top music educators. Many lessons used simple, yet interesting manipulatives that encouraged more engagement from the students during the "boring" parts of a lesson, such as following along the lyrics or tapping out the rhythms.
To some, these may seem like little toys, but to me they are are wonderful classroom manipulatives that appeal to the students, and inspire them to participate!
Many students aren't interested in learning how to read music, reading along with their finger, tracking, etc - however, if you give them a small, hand-held item to use while they follow along, they'll feel more interested in participating, and actually do the parts of the lessons that seem less appealing.
Example: If we're singing about a blue bird, why not give them a small blue bird or feather to use to point at the music while following along and learning the new lyrics? Or, if they are learning a new rhythm to a Halloween-themed poem or rhyme, give them an orange swizzle stick with a pumpkin on the end to assist them into tapping out the rhythm on their rhythm map, instead of using a finger.
Another example is if I am reading a story about some kind of critter, such as a spider, I can give them little plastic spiders to hold up while singing a refrain or hook after a specific phrase that's repeated throughout the book.
