A lot of students are hesitant about singing and playing instruments in front of their class. Some students are shy, while others are concerned with “looking cool” and disinterested. Instead of standing out, the kids try to blend in.
A little incentive can inspire anyone, even the toughest fifth graders, to sing in front of their peers!
When I have the funds, I like to offer snacks as prizes to children who successfully perform part-songs in small groups in music class. These tasks are not easy, but the prospect of earning a treat makes a lot of my kiddos brave enough to go for it.
I usually only award treats at the end of a grading period, after the children have been working on their repertoire for a while. Students must perform their music correctly, in tune, and in parts to earn.
A lot of students who attempt to earn a treat in my class don’t quite make it the first few times. Children must meet high standards to earn. However, because I have over 400 students, awarding snacks to a group of three or four kids in each class can become pricy quickly.
Please help encourage my students to be brave and take risks by purchasing packaged snacks, cookies, and chips for my classroom. Thanks!
