Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in an area of New York City which is notable for its incredible diversity of cultures. More than half of the residents are foreign-born, representing every one of the world's continents. Despite this, many of my students' families do not have the resources and opportunities to explore the area's rich cultural and musical resources.
My 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students love to learn about music and perform songs on instruments.
Many of my students are kinesthetic learners and learn best when performing on various instruments. When I am able to integrate music learning with other subjects, such as math, reading, world history, geography and social studies, my students tap into a learning environment where all learning is connected. That understanding is what compelled me to create this project.
My Project
This project is about empowering students through music to learn about the world and then share their learning with others. My 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will have the opportunity to learn to read musical notation and then perform various music on pitched classroom instruments. They will learn about music history, geography and science and put it all together by performing different songs on instruments. Each class will use pitched hand bells and xylophones to create music and have performance.
With your help, my students will begin to see that performing on real musical instruments can be fun and empowering and can lead to knowledge, love and appreciation of all music.
My students will also learn that music is deeply connected to many different subjects such as geography, social studies, reading and math.
It will allow them to have the empowering experience of sharing what they've learned with our whole school community.
