Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a lower income school with a very diverse population. In addition to falling behind academically, our students have faced a tremendous loss of social and emotional skills. In my music class, I am combining social and emotional lessons with music learning. Music is a great place to learn necessary life skills like cooperation, respect, inclusion and teamwork. In music, students have to work together to create music. It is also a great space to learn about different cultures and beliefs.

There is another reason I believe music is necessary now, more than ever.

All students need to feel successful at some area in school. For many who are struggling academically, music can provide the place where a student feels successful and capable. By learning basic music skills, students are enabled to use creativity to create his/her own music.

My Project

I have included a set of African djembes in my request, because learning about different cultures and traditions in different parts of Africa are an important part of teaching diversity and inclusion. These drums will also be used to teach about other cultures around the world who use drums as an integral part of their music. Tambourines are also a part of learning cultural history. The tambourines will be used for rhythm practice, as well as a unit on folk songs.

Understanding a culture's music is an important part of cultural understanding.

By learning about different traditions around the world, I will combine SEL skills with music to produce successful, confident students who are able to work together and respect each other.
