Music Around the World

My school needs a collection of World Music Cd's to support our global focus curriculum and to compliment my art lessons, and since we no longer have a music program these CD's will liven up the student's education. Requested CDs include 'The Mozart Effect Music for Children ', 'Ella & Friends', 'World Playground ' and more!

I teach fine art to 140 Pre-School through Fourth graders in a Public Charter School in Washington DC. The students I teach come from all over the world, from Ethiopia to Colombia. Although the majority (about 90%) of my students come from low-income inner city families, they are enthusiastic, bright, and willing to learn and absorb information like sponges. It is unfortunate that our Music program was cut, so our students are deprived of the wonders of a musical experience in school. With such diverse students who are very active and love music and dance, it makes sense to play music while I teach art. I always love to see their faces light up when I say we are going to listen to music while we work. They appreciate the sounds and always ask me a lot of questions about the music I play, but my selection of music is very limited. With the radio saturated with derogatory messages in some of the Rap and Hip Hop that most of my students are exposed to, I would really like to be able to expose them to different selections of music that better reflect their own diverse ethnic backgrounds. The music selections from the Putumayo (and other world music companies) collection are perfect for teaching the students about music from around the world. Their CD selections range from Latin Groove to Sahara Lounge, to Asian Dreamland. I am requesting your help in purchasing a collection of Putumayo or other world music to use in my art classroom as well as in our whole school. Our school has a "global cultures" focus, and a having a full musical library from around the world is a great way to teach this focus. Your support would benefit my students in so many ways. First, it will give them an edge to be exposed to some of the cultures they will experience while living in Washington DC, a very international city. Second, music will deeply enrich my art lessons, as I already bring in art from all over the world. Third, it will create a foundation for these underexposed students to appreciate an eclectic and diverse selection of music while celebrating their own cultures through music. Fourth, it will help them to become more culturally aware and sensitive and open minded. Thank you for your attention to my request and your support of our schools!
