Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my first year at my present school. I have been very fortunate this year to teach 29 wonderful and hardworking second graders in the Bronx. I have always believed firmly in the creative arts, and that children should be exposed to the arts in school. In our school we do not have a music teacher, which I think is absurd. Nevertheless, that is the way things are. It really bothers me however, since I know that music and the arts enhance and complement academic instruction. What disturbed me most this year was that as part of our literacy curriculum (Rigby Literature), we had to do a shared reading thematic unit with a book entitled Encyclopedia of Instruments. Students were taught about the different groups of instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, etc.) However, we had no instruments for students to actually look at or use to make their own music. I felt I was teaching them from a purely theoretical standpoint. There was nothing tangible for them to take away from the unit. The only thing I did with that unit was expose them to different types of music. When I teach second grade next year it would be better for the students if they could have actual instruments to use when we are studying that unit.
