This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my experience, music is usually not first choice in a school’s curriculum. In other words, after all the programs have been established for the year, attention to music can be slim. Most teachers have to scramble to come up with musical programs and buy materials for their classroom projects. This year, I have been chosen to teach music to pre-kindergarten through first grade students. Since each grade has specific music projects to accomplish, I find it hard to provide the instruments needed to teach basic rhythm and harmony. I am very proud to teach music in this school. I consider it an honor that I was chosen to be the first music teacher for the younger elementary school students. Currently, I have some rhythm instruments, but not enough. The instruments are worn and broken. It would be wonderful for the students to discover music with fresh instruments as I provide the songs and teach them how to use them. I would like the students to enjoy music and experience first hand using different instruments. I remember as child, being taught music from the rhythm sticks to the drums, bringing them all together in harmony. Music appreciation is essential at an early age, it assists in exposing the students to not only various types of music, but will give them exposure to different cultures through the origins of the instruments. In addition, the students will gain a much broader view in learning as well as developing early musical abilities to enhance their educational experience. The music program is designed for basic and introductory lessons in rhythm and percussion focused for early childhood development. At the end of the day, a young student can feel proud knowing they have a special talent.
