This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach elementary music in grades K-5. The school has a student population of about 550, and is in a lower income neighborhood in the city. There is a very large percentage of children on free and reduced lunch. The school population will increasing in the next couple of years due to expansion.
When I came to this school 4 years ago, there was very little in the way of instruments or equipment for use in the music classes. I have tried to expand use of such equipment and instruments in the overall music program.
In addition to regular music classes, involving use of instruments and recordings, I also direct the school's "Select Choir", which performs at school programs and for various civic and church groups within the city. I also work closely with the school P.E. teacher in teaching music and movement classes for all students in every grade. We need a karaoke machine to allow us to use recorded music with the choir when they perform and there is no piano available. It would also be used in playing the music we use for our music and movement classes in which we have from 70 to 90 students per class where a normal cd/cassette player will not suffice.
Having the karaoke machine will provide much greater flexibility in playing music both for larger groups and smaller ones as well. It will also provide a more sufficient portable sound system when smaller cd/cassette players cannot produce enough sound. In addition to playing Cd's and cassettes, it provides the ability to record as well. This equipment will be extremely useful for practically all students in the school and other faculty members as well.
