Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our primary center is a Title I school in Los Angeles. Our students are special because at the young age of 3 they are beginning their schooling careers. Students in our PAL program are identified with moderate to severe disabilities primarily autism, speech impairments, and intellectual disability.
The PAL program is an empirically studied early intervention program, where students from ages 3-5 can attend district preschool classes daily with supports embedded to help them succeed in daily life.
Our students practice language and social skills and also study STEM-based themes to build literacy, math, and cognitive abilities.
Part of what makes life in a PALs room great is that every day our students have new opportunities, to learn, play, and grow together. We strive for progress not perfection, in understanding that each of us learn differently and therefore receive tailored, hands-on instruction on the daily.
My Project
Our students love music class! Everyday we experiment with different classroom instruments and different ways to move our bodies.
With the drums students will count aloud, keep steady beats, and have fun with their classmates.
It is difficult for students to keep the same rhythm with out the same instruments. I would love to teach our class more about keeping steady beats through counting with percussion instruments.
A set of classroom drums will allow students to play fast and slow, as well as experiment with new instruments like hand shakers.
