I am the Project ARTS Coordinator for The Danny Kaye School. We currently have a Steel Band Program, with the band consisting of 10 pieces. We would like to create a richer sound in the music by enhancing the band with the addition of a 5-piece Rhythm Drum set. As our students participated in performances within our district, they noticed that the sound of other bands was more vibrant, and realized that it was the accompanying rhythm drums that made the difference.
With an upcoming concert in late May, our students are becoming concerned. Our school is an inner city elementary school, and the steel band serves 20 students in grades 3 - 5, with the whole school and community benefiting from performances presented. These performances mean a lot to our students. For some who do not excel in academics, this is their opportunity to shine. They want to do their best, and show that they are successful at something.
