Music Alive! Bringing the Arts Into The ELA/Math Classroom!

My students need a classroom guitar, keyboard, rhythm band set, and a teacher's guide on how to incorporate music into the reading and math interventions for diverse learners.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Alexander's classroom raised $487

This project is fully funded

My Students

The young leaders at my school are a diverse group of students from African-American and Latino backgrounds; Ninety-nine percent are receiving free or reduced price lunch. They reside in a community which is plagued with low, socio-economic ills and a lack of programs that exposes them to the aesthetics of music. My students have been diagnosed with learning deficits such as attention-deficit, dyslexia, autism, and emotionally-challenged. This project targets how my diverse students process information which is visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

My Project

It brings me pure joy to provide my students with a learning project that gives them access to musical equipment in the classroom that is usually out of their reach due to underfunded schools in low-income communities. It is well known that youth tend to love music as they can be seen dancing as they walk with earbuds or headphones plugged into their portable music devices. Therefore, I want to use what they love to captivate and heighten their interest in learning through a hands-on approach!

My background is in the arts and from experience, I have learned that the arts has a way of creatively connecting students' learning of challenging concepts, coupled with making it easier to identify barriers to learning as diverse learners are often receptive to activities that are deemed as fun.

Research suggests that when students receive sequential music instruction, it can impact their proficiency in reading, math and cognition. It also posts that the use of sensory experiences and a research-based strategy is highly effective in the special education classroom.

"How to Include Math and ELA in Your Classroom" teacher guide is a great resource to help incorporate music into my lessons and interventions. The Keyboard Package comes with a CD to teach students how to play and teaches skills such as focus, listening, and following directions. The Classroom Guitar is unique as this an instrument to introduce strumming and educational songwriting. The Deluxe Rhythm Band Set includes fifteen "hands-on learning" instruments ranging from drums to tambourines, to bring music to life in my classroom, while increasing ELA/Math skills!

With your support, my students can engage in innovative, hands-on, sensory experiences with music to develop the mind both artisically and academically! Thank-you!
