My students need four miniature human figures to provide a practical way to lean the surface muscles in our Health and Anatomy/Physiology classes.

My Students
Creativity is a key component in any teacher's repertoire. Working in school systems with little money for extras always poses a requirement for innovation, on a daily basis. Minds of students today need to be stimulated by more than lectures and handouts.
Our high school students are from the inner city.
The school district is medium-sized and the community is struggling to recover from large businesses moving away from the area. We also have more than 65% of our student body on the free or reduced lunch program. However, this is a school where the students feel comfortable, take charge of their own education and have a lot of camaraderie among themselves and the faculty.
My Project
Our 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students attend classes where different body systems are taught. For both teachers, it is a struggle to add more to the curriculum than lectures, handouts, and an occasional video. The addition of these models, that help the students visualize the different surface muscles, would be a definite added benefit. Having four models will allow smaller study groups to help them internalize the lessons, and test each other. Also, individual testing could occur, at stations. Students can also come in before or after school and on their lunch to sit and solo study, or have a one-on-one session with the teacher.
For most, learning from lectures does not allow students to retain large amounts of information.
Not only will the models bring in more students to learn these systems because we would have hands on opportunities, but they can also retain that information longer because they will have "experienced" the muscles. We have several students desiring to be medical doctors. This would be a great way excited them and to "get the ball rolling" towards their future.
