Murals, Science and Art, Oh My! Empowering Students Through Art
My students need expertise from an amazing artist who will help them transform the blank walls surrounding their Literacy Garden into a true learning space with a mural.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 21st Century learners, who are eager to use all of the technology available to them! I teach 24 curious, natural born, third-grade scientists in a small Title I school, that has an amazing and supportive principal.
My students are eager to learn, and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them.
Everything is a potential investigation or experiment to them, so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project-based opportunities as possible.
I constantly enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEM correlations whenever possible. Because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools in our area, so grants and projects like this one become an integral part of how I obtain materials to supplement learning experiences. I truly believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential, and my job is to enable them to reach it.
My Project
My students and I have created a Literacy Garden, where they plant and cultivate seeds. The space is an extension of our classroom where students conduct research, observe the animals that visit the garden, and go to when they want a quiet place to read and reflect.
This project will allow us to get advice and expertise from an amazing muralist, who will not only help my students paint a mural for our garden, but will also teach them about the environment and love for nature, while they learn painting techniques and strategies.
This project is a continuation of our school beautification project, where the walls surrounding our garden are being transformed into learning spaces that supplement life, earth, and physical science concepts and activities that are being taught in the classroom.
Blank walls provide learning opportunities. As students draw, paint, and learn about nature, they will also develop a love of art and an appreciation for the world around them. This project will be empowering students through art at every level! My students will leave a legacy of science and art that classrooms will enjoy for many years to come.
