Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low-income community with a high population of ELL learners. Although they may come from financial hardships and are newcomers to this country, they come into school every day willing and eager to learn.

My students are genuinely kind, passionate, and determined.

This year, I am teaching 2nd grade in a special education classroom. Already, my students are showing me how responsible they can be and they are working hard to fill up a marble jar for a class reward! They are ready to roll and they are perfecting their classroom routine everyday. Story time or a read aloud is their favorite. They are excited to learn new math skills this year. This is my third year of teaching and already my students motivate me as a teacher and person every day to help lift them up, just like my teachers did with me when I was their age.

My Project

As a lower grade teacher, I immediately felt the need the create a project for snacks when I found out my class would not have lunch time until 6th period. This is the last lunch period of the day. I knew this would mean that they would have a really long morning before they got to eat anything. As expected, my students were hungry by 10:00 am on the first 2 days of school and they were continuously asking when they would get to go to lunch.

I believe that young minds need to be fueled in order to learn and retain what they are learning.

I also find it hard to deny a child a snack or any food break because so many students in our community alone already come from financial difficulties. As a teacher, one never knows what goes on at home and whether or not a child had a proper meal or if a child was able to have a restful night. As a teacher, this is my way to motivate and re-energize my class so they can move onto the next learning period, whether it is writing or math time.

I am hoping to be able to have snacks available in the classroom for those students who may not be able to come in with a snack which is often the case. I chose a variety of snacks to give them options because not every student likes the same foods. Some students may like the Veggies chips, while others might not and may like the regular Lays chips. Some students may not like either and may like to eat cookies or pretzels instead. Whatever they like or need, I would have these available in the classroom. A snack break will help them re-focus and learn.
