This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.
All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.
Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well. Some of our student also have feeding needs.
My Project
When we eat or drink we use our mouths. Part of speech therapy includes feeding therapy. Typically developing children learn how to clear food from a spoon, keep liquids in their mouth when they drink, and to swallow. There are many reasons why a child may have a feeding disorder. Some of our students are tube fed, some are only able to eat purees, and some are trying to move onto solid foods.
Some of our students have never eaten solid food before.
We need the right types of food to transition them to solids. As they learn how to chew and swallow food, we do not want them to choke. The perfect food to give them are foods called Meltable Solids.
Meltable solids are foods that a child can munch on but disolves when it comes in contact with saliva. This helps avoid the chance of choking on foods as they learn how to chew and swallow. I want the students to have different flavored options and textures to try as they learn. I want to use something they will enjoy because eating should be enjoyable!
