My Students

How would you feel if you could learn all about topics that interest you, while sharing your learning with your family and loved ones? Every day, my 30 inquisitive first graders beg to learn more about subjects like Mexico, mummies, and spiders, but we don't have enough books on these topics!

I teach in an urban community in northern Illinois.

All of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over half are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have even a single book at home to share with their loved ones. Despite a lack of literature at home, these students are eager learners and avid readers, excited to read a new book or to talk about what they learn from texts. They love delving into great nonfiction books with interesting pictures and sharing new facts they've been fascinated by with classmates and family members. At times it can be difficult to find books at an appropriate level for my young learners. As a result, our classroom library lacks books about some nonfiction topics that my students would love to learn more about.

My Project

With your donation of nonfiction books on topics including Mexico, mummies, spiders, volcanoes, and the human body, my students will have the resources needed to investigate questions they develop about these topics. Many of the books I am requesting are at most students' independent reading levels. Several books are appropriate for parents to share with their child, which will enable my students to communicate their interests and learning with the adults who care for them. To help promote family literacy, each of these thematic book sets will be made available for students to check out and share with their families.

Your support for this project will help my young students learn about exciting new topics.

You will make it possible for students to enjoy learning about these topics at home while sharing their love of reading with family and friends.
