Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the world. We are a Title I school in a low-income community. To go bags of breakfast and lunch are available to every child in our building each day. In the fall, as we move to a blended learning model, each student will only be in the school building for approximately 1/3 of the time that they normally would attend. Hence, the majority of their learning will still take place remotely. My students are a combination of English Language Learners and children with language based learning disabilities. While we are learning on the 2D platform of a computer, my students need multi-sensory language experiences that they can touch and feel.

My Project

As an ESL and Title 1 Reading provider, the majority of my instruction will be delivered to students via distance learning in the fall. My students are entering 2nd grade.

Due to the Covid pandemic the incoming second graders have missed out on a great deal of the multisensory word work that makes 1st grade so important.

Many early elementary grade students learn to spell and decode words by receiving instruction with magnetic letters. Students can feel and manipulate these letters as they move them around on a magnetic board. Magnetic letters are eventually replaced by ones that are written with dry erase markers on the same boards. As one can imagine this is a difficult process to replicate through distance learning when students do not have these materials in their homes. This project would allow each student to receive a backpack that contains a set of magnetic letters, markers and a magnetic board to take home. If students do not return to school I will deliver these backpacks to student homes.
