My Project
Multi-sensory activities provide needed scaffolding to beginning and struggling readers and include visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile activities to enhance learning and memory. As students practice a learned concept, reduce the multi-sensory scaffolds until the student is using only the visual for reading. The items purchased with the funding of this project are an important part of phonics instruction. Each child needs a plastic tray with 2 colors of sand. This is part of the multisensory experience in our structured literacy methodology.
The use of these sand trays is part of explicit, direct instruction which incorporates all sensory pathways and provides the student with exposure to correct pronunciation, related objects, brainstorming of words that contain the new concept, practice with all known spellings of the sound, acquaintance to the new concept in literature, and practice with reading at the word, phrase, or sentence level.
These components offer an overall, multisensory experience with sounds and spelling rules to foster reading and spelling success.
Multi-sensory instruction incorporates the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile modalities in the components of learning to read. This is achieved through the process of motor sequencing and sensory feedback. Please help me bring these materials into my classroom to support the needs of my students.
