I teach third grade at a low income school where many students don't have what they need for school. Most of them need to take supplies home from school to complete homework on a daily basis. When extra practice or materials are needed at home, I know that it’s probably not going to happen. I provide things for them to take home to use, and then pray that they come back!
In our school system we spend a grueling quarter on multiplication and division concepts. That is a very long time to come up with ideas that make learning fun. Students also have difficulty learning their facts. We need new materials to motivate these children to learn and hold onto these facts. From third grade to fifth grade, students struggle to remember their facts. Not only that, they need these facts for so many other skills. I’m hoping by getting new materials and finding new ways to teach these students, the percentage of students who know their facts with sky rocket!
I really need multiplication/division games, quiz cubes, fact community, toss'n'catch, and twist and shout items to spark the fun in learning. I've seen fun and engaging tasks drive students to learn. These are the memories that they use to "remember" all of their life!
You will make my students successful in all of their future math classes by simply helping with one concept. Just think about all of the mathematical problems that you've solved that relate to multiplication or division!
