Help me give my students access a Multiple Sensory Environment (MSE) Room equipped with a variety of visual, auditory, tactile and vestibular tools that will support them in emotional regulation, in alignment with the Conscious Discipline Educational Strategy.
In agreement with Portele (2023), the rapid technological and social development of the globalizing world challenges the traditional practices implemented in present-day education systems. Furthermore, a rising need for disciplinary interventions in academic institutions has been observed, as proved by data collected by Kate Allen. During her work at our school over the school years 2021 to 2025, the number of days of out of school suspension increased from 471.82 to 745.43. Considering research by Crescentini (2016) suggesting that mindfulness training enhances emotional processing, introduction of an educational intervention promoting self-regulation will positively impact the frequency of disruptive behaviors.
Our project focuses on the design and arrangement of a Multisensory Environment Room at MMA, inspired by a psychological intervention developed in 1975 by a Dutch pediatric psychologist, Ad Verheul (ASD, 2019) to provide kids with the opportunity to experience and process strong emotions, such as anger and anxiety, through the use sensory modalities, including punching bags, body socks, tactile walls, balance boards, and scented objects.
The neurobiological rationale behind the initiative lies in the stimulation of brain regions responsible for multisensory integration, particularly superior temporal sulcus (STS), which as demonstrated by Thesen (2004) plays a key role in simultaneous perception of audio-visual information, and “Congruency between multiple presented sensory stimuli may enhance emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses in the positive domain.” Schreuder (2016).
