My students need a class set of "A Young People's History of the United States" to learn about U.S. history from multiple perspectives.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The faces of my students are usually not represented in traditional history text book. In our class students learn through inquiry based activities about U.S. history from multiple perspectives. It is difficult to obtain books written at a middle school level that acknowledge people of color.
My students are in the eighth grade and live in inner-city Los Angeles.
They have learned to be critical thinkers from a young age and are at times difficult to engage. They need to connect at a personal level with what they are learning. They are always asking how historical events impact them.
My Project
My class will read selected chapters that support our inquiry based units. Students will analyze and discuss the information presented in the requested book. They will also reference the books when writing essays or conducting research. With this donation each student in my class will have his/her own copy to read of "A Young People's History of the United States: Columbus to the War on Terror" in class.
By having access to their own copy of the book, students will learn about the many contributions of people of color in the U.S.
Students will also become critical thinkers by discussing and analyzing the various perspectives presented in this historical text.
