This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our classroom is a flourishing hub of growth and development that includes children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds – born overseas or here in the United States – who are beginning transitional kindergarten and kindergarten. For all children, starting school is a time of major transition for both the children and their families, but for children that have just immigrated to the United States or that are just learning to understand and speak the English Language, beginning school is not only about adjusting to school and its routines, but also about doing so in a largely unfamiliar culture and language.
Your donation to this project will help these uniquely challenged English language learners adjust to classroom routines and procedures and develop the foundations of English across subject areas by giving them visual representations, opportunities for movement, and hands-on manipulative experiences.
Transitional kindergarteners and kindergarteners are learning foundations of math, reading, and language. The books in this project will provide students with visual representations of colors, and they will help students develop the English language related to describing objects using color words. The sheet protectors will give us a tool to post visual reminders of those colors along with the English language representations of each color word. The color dabbers will give students hands-on activities to bridge English language color words with math and counting activities, and the language developed in the color dabbing activities will help students develop foundations of number sense while developing the English language needed to describe objects by quantity. Students will use the hole punches to practice that mathematical language while strengthening fine motor skills as they count the number of holes they punch in colorful strips of paper.
