This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Imagine you've just immigrated to a new country. You need to get your high school diploma, you need to get a job, you need to find stable housing. You also have trouble reading in your own language, and now you must learn to read, write, and speak a new language in order to survive. This is the reality for my students. As their librarian, my goal is to increase their literacy skills in their home languages and any new language they may need to learn.
Reading is critical to our survival, and also critical to our joy.
My students love finding something that they're capable of reading on our shelves, be it visual dictionaries to grow their vocabularies or translated stories to expand their imaginations. As part of a school-wide reading initiative, I like to offer prizes to our most prolific and most improved readers: fun stickers, croc charms, and stress-ball pets are some of the most sought-after goods. Button makers and origami paper allow students to practice sequencing comprehension and be rewarded with art that they made. Additionally, all students who come to the library can enjoy the library's seasonal decor and get a free bookmark when they borrow books. Let's make our readers proud of their progress!
