Help me give my students more opportunities to find books to fall in love with. These books will unlock a world of possibilities and foster a sense of belonging.
I have the privilege of teaching 100 ninth grade Multilingual learners Government, Economics, and English. My students come from Yemen, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, El Salvador, Haiti, Georgia just to name a few.
They are sharp students who are eager to show me what they know and I make it a priority to harness that enthusiasm in each of my units.
I teach at a high needs school in Coney Island, Brooklyn in a Russian speaking community. Many of these students rarely venture out and explore on their own. It is important for me to introduce concepts that they could relate to and more importantly that will encourage them to be lifelong independent learners.
My Project
I want my students to become engaged with books in which the main characters look, sound, and feel like them. Students are drawn to books in which they see themselves. Very often if you ask a classroom full of students if they like to read, very few hands will be raised. I think it is extremely important for students to know that reading isn't just what we do to get more knowledge, but rather it is a tool for empowerment. They can be empowered by finding books on topics that they are interested in.
If a student goes their entire high school career without finding a book they love, then I have not done my job as an educator.
With your help, we will give 100 students opportunities to immerse themselves in books that validate their experiences.
