My Project
The school where I teach is rich with students from many cultures. In my own kindergarten classroom, 2/3 of my students are English Language Learners, some of whom are just beginning to learn English. I want to create a classroom library so my students' parents can support our reading curriculum by reading picture books to their children in their home language and then discussing the reading concepts we are learning about in kindergarten.
Practicing reading strategies in their home language actually increases students' reading skills in English, helps to develop literacy in their home language, supports feelings of pride in their culture and emerging bilingualism, and also strengthens their parents' connection to their child's learning and to the school.
I've created materials to go along with these books, also in the students' home languages so that parents will know just what questions to ask and will have discussion starters to use with their kids.
I'm so excited for the opportunity to help my wonderful classroom families access age-appropriate books in their home languages so they can be more engaged with their child's developing reading skills.
