Multicultural Reading in Mrs. Stoddard's Classroom

Help me give my students multicultural reading opportunities to increase their literacy and sensitivity toward other ethnic groups.

My Students

My students come from a wonderful area just north of a large metropolitan city. The city is full of historically-significant architecture and the neighborhoods are full of families who can trace generations back in the same town. Other families have made the choice to live in this quaint town with literally tree-lined streets and corner shops downtown. The town has just recently graduated from having one stoplight to seven as businesses have recognized the area for the gem that it is.

My students are very hesitant to read assigned books in their English class.

In an effort to mitigate their hesitation, I would like to offer them more choices in the way of age-appropriate books. I want to see them excited about books, carrying them around to all of their classes. I want them to celebrate finishing an entire book on their own. I want them to catch a passion for reading. Doing so at the Jr. High level will pay huge dividends in high school, in college, and throughout their entire life as they navigate our advanced, but the still verbal, world.

My Project

With Covid-19 affecting our students in terms of when they come to school and how they interact with their teachers, so many aspects of school have been changed and not for the better. The students have had less access to books, teachers, etc. My goal for this project is to increase the students' interaction with multicultural books and create a community of learners that appreciate all types of students and teachers.

And the request for a teacher chair is simply so that I can sit down between classes and so that the students have a happy teacher.
