Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The current situation is something I never imagined we would be facing. My first graders are so little and really don't understand what is going on at this time. They just know that they miss their teachers and their friends. We didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to them or pack up for the year.
Students, teachers, administrators, and parents have all been working together to learn a new way of teaching that is incredibly challenging to accomplish when we are all in different places.
Our school and our city have never embarked on a task of this magnitude before.
Our students have been incredibly hard-working during this time. Their favorite time is our weekly morning meetings when we go over the calendar and talk about our feelings. It's a time when the kids get to see each other and it creates a sense of normalcy for them.
My Project
Both teaching my students about their culture and learning from them has been an important and beautiful part of my teaching career. It helps gives students a sense of self-worth and pride talking about their culture and customs. It is such a rewarding experience to hear and see the kids tell their stories. It is also vital that we teach them about other cultures.
It is our job as teachers to expose our students to cultures they may not have knowledge of and show them how we respect each person's culture.
Learning about cultures, in my opinion, is done best through the magic of a book. Each book on my list was specifically chosen to teach a different lesson. Whether that be someone's culture, empathy for others, how to speak up for others or another beautiful lesson that is important for our future leaders to know.
I am teaching future lawyers, doctors, protesters, care-givers, politicians, teachers, humanitarians, and wonderful humans who will be changing our world. I want them to be knowledgeable, not just in math and science, but also in their fellow human.
