Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an English and Social Science teacher in a dual language school in east Oakland, and I teach two first grade classes, 37 students altogether. My students are inquisitive six and seven year old who love stories. Many times during a read aloud, we take turns acting out parts of the stories, and they truly enjoy being involved in storytelling. Before the break we read Owl Moon, and they had so much fun “owling.” During another reading, they run around the classroom yelling “the sky is falling” as the character was doing it in the story. I often pause before turning the page, for dramatic effect, as they predict what will happen next.

It’s always great to see them having fun with the text, while learning at the same time.

To help them improve their reading skills we often play word games in teams, and it is heartwarming to see them cheer reach other. The other day all the teams had the same number of points, and when I declared them all winners, the entire class erupted in spontaneous celebration. Those are the moments that make all the work we do as teachers worthwhile

My Project

These books and word games will greatly enhance our classroom and enrich my student’s reading experience. The titles are selected based on my student’s interests and backgrounds. I want their literary experience to include not only windows into someone else’s lives, but the mirrors into their own backgrounds as well. It is so important for young children to see themselves reflected in the literature. It sends the message that their stories are worth telling.

The SPLASH word game set will help them improve their decoding skills through fun and engaging activities.

My students love learning through play, and they will gain valuable skills that will stay with them forever.
