Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle schoolers have a reputation for hating reading. And our younger generations are said to lack the attention span to sit down to a good book. Our students are here to prove them wrong. Our students are a mighty group of middle schoolers from deep East Oakland who dream, achieve and prepare for success in high school, college, and life. And a big part of that is our school's culture of reading. Our students read books of their choosing in at least one of their core classes each day. They compete to see which grade level can read the most. They smile for pictures when they reach milestones. And they champion their favorite books with one another.

To quote JK Rowling, "If you think you don't like reading, you just haven't found the right book yet." And so we work together at our school to help everyone find just right books.

These are books that are neither too hard nor too easy--books with just the right push. And these are books that match our interests, our curiosities.

My Project

In their distance-learning English class this fall, our students are reading the modern fantasy adventure "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordian and exploring how it echoes the themes of Greek mythology. This unit is engaging and rigorous, but it's not culturally responsive to our community of African American, Latino, and Tongan students.

Our students deserve to see kids that look like themselves as the heroes of the story and the stories of their ancestors honored.

This project will add 2 copies each of new titles to our shared 6th grade Kindle library. While learning from home, each of our students has a donated Kindle with a large shared library of high-interest books so that they can get lost in the pages of a text that's just-right for them and continue building their independent reading skills. We will purchase a range of new adventures to compliment our existing independent reading library of multicultural myths and folklore, including the following:

"Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky" by Kwame Mbalia, in which a 7th grade boy accidentally opens a passage between our world and one where ancient African gods battle with the characters of African American legend.

"Paola Santiago and the River of Tears" by Tehlor Kay Mejia, in which a 12-year old whose classmate had drowned the previous year encounters La Llorona.

"The Storm Runner" by J. C. Cervantes, in which a boy in New Mexico discovers what he always thought was his physical disability is actually part of his connection to the ancient Mayan gods.

"One Boy, No Water" by Lehua Parker, in which a boy's island life is made boring by his bizarre allergy to water until he dives into an adventure in which Pacific island myths and legends become real.
