Multicultural Music Mania

My Project

As a teacher of every single student in the school, I have the ability to influence the lives of many children. Music lends itself naturally to multicultural learning and students are almost always actively engaged and excited to learn in their music class. However, the majority of my students come from very low income families and have never been exposed to much outside of their own immediate community. The pandemic has made this even worse since several of our parents have lost jobs, have had their rent increased and have had to move in with other friends or family members to be able to afford their housing. Many of my students are descendants of Mexico, Latin America, South America and Asia, but some have never even had the opportunity to learn about the music and traditions of their own families, let alone those of their classmates.

My desire is to give every student access to the musical knowledge of their descendants, community and those they otherwise may never have any exposure to.

Students will use the instruments and materials of this project to learn through songs, dance, movement, performances and play.

Music also is a great place to teach social emotional learning skills. Students learn tolerance and acceptance of cultures and traditions other than their own. It provides a safe environment for all to express themselves and help each other learn through guided creation and improvisation.
