My Students

Students are expected to be technology experts as they leave high school; yet, our schools often give them little opportunity to develop those skills. While they live and operate in a digital world, they often leave that behind when they enter the school building.

My students are considered College Preparatory, but many struggle with poverty, learning disabilities and second-language acquisition.

In California, our schools are diverse and crowded which makes hearing individual student voices difficult and having their needs met even more challenging. These are students who dream of attending college, but don't always know how to get there.

My Project

Digital camcorders will give students the ability to transfer their written work to multimedia presentations, thus preparing them for both the world of work and post-secondary education. Digital media is an area where students must be guided and instructed, but they are often left to figure out these skills on their own using recreational tools. I hope to provide my students with a way to capture their unique, individual voices and grow in their ability to produce sophisticated presentations. Using these camcorders to review American Literature in Film or interview each other about their pursuits of the American Dream will add an authenticity to the curriculum they experience. The immediacy that will be offered by these devices will allow for an engaging, productive learning experience. Students will feel valued and respected as their thought, opinions, reflections and writings are captured on film.

We often believe our students already know how to use technology.

But what they don't always know is how to use it appropriately, effectively and powerfully. And when many of them do not even have access to a computer at home, sophisticated, new technology is often out of their reach. This project will put all of this potential right into their hands.
