My Students
Three years ago I moved to Nashville, Tennessee with little to no knowledge of the demographics or population. I quickly learned that Nashville is immensely diverse and I am fortunate to teach at a school that represents over twenty countries and five languages.
Our students are all threads to a beautifully woven tapestry honoring their Somali, Egyptian, Hispanic, and European cultures.
They are tenacious, fearless, and curious learners but above all, THEY are the best teachers I could ask for.
My Project
This year, I have the joy of working full-time with our students who have the gift of speaking two languages. They are resilient and beautiful but can often be forgotten about in literature. Their stories are not the ones you always see on the New York Times Best Seller or highlighted at the public library.
I want to bring my students a library where they can see themselves and their stories to see books as both windows into the world and mirrors to themselves.
It's not that these books don't exist, but are not the ones that we see in mainstream media or curriculum.
