My students need a classroom environment that is welcoming. I am hoping to provide them with a comfortable place to learn and resources that will empower them to continue being bilingual.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are English Language Learners who come from various countries in Central and South America. My goal is to teach them English in order to read and write on grade level with their English speaking peers, while retaining their home language and culture. In our school, we believe in reaching our students wherever they are, in whatever way they learn, and instilling a lasting love of learning.
At our school, embracing all of our languages and cultures is essential to our curriculum and infused throughout our school day.
Our school has a very large Guatemalan community but is also formed of many other countries such as, Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador and Peru. As families enter our school, we hope that they feel represented, understood, and respected.
My Project
Providing students and their families with a comfortable environment that they feel represented is my number one goal. This classroom will not only be used for learning but it will also be a community room where our families will borrow books from our bilingual lending library and learn how to support their children at home.
It takes a village to raise a child and together we will make childhood a memorable experience for our students.
This project will provide books for our bilingual lending library. Our lending library is available to all of our families and because many of the families are Spanish speakers the Spanish books will be a great resource for them. The project will also provide for a comfortable learning space. Currently our class does not have a rug and having one would make our community building stronger. Additionally, this project will provide a globe, which will be a great resource for the students to find different places in the world, including where they and their families are from.
