Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are collegiate-driven scholars with lots of school pride. They excel in not only academics, but athletics and arts as well, which gives them the a broad range of for possibilities for future endeavors in higher education. They have big goals of one day earning college degrees and giving back to their communities.

My students not only have lots of school pride, but also pride in their diverse identities.

When their academic curriculum is inclusive, it gives them a sense of school belonging and affirmation for their own and others' differing identities. Helping students to feel a stronger racial identity and empathy towards others reduces discrimination and stereotypes, while building a strong classroom community. My students thrive when given opportunities to make learning inclusive.

My Project

Diversity and inclusion are critical elements of a classroom community. Diversity refers to the characteristics that make us unique; such as race, gender, or abilities. Inclusivity refers to the behaviors and social norms that ensure people feel welcome. These books will enhance our classroom community and spark crucial conversations about diversity and inclusivity. Having these conversations will increase appreciation and acceptance of individual differences, while helping to form meaningful friendships.

Effective literature gives students the tools to create an inclusive culture where diversity is not only accepted, but celebrated.

Diverse classroom libraries matter. Students of color should feel seen when they read books and when students cannot find themselves reflected in books, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part. Materials matter. Skin-toned crayons should be available in a variety of shades so that children can see themselves in all aspects of their classroom. I’m growing my curriculum based on the community of children that I serve, which means learning about my students and their cultures and making sure that they’re represented.
