Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd graders have been profoundly affected by the Coronavirus pandemic and the civil unrest due to George Floyd's murder. They miss each other, their school, and learning face to face from me. Most of my students have had to borrow devices and hotspots from school to embark on distance learning.

A lot of my students need the free meals they used to get at school and now they come to our Grab and Go Center that gives out breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday.

Most families in this community are struggling financially due to unemployment and poverty. In addition, they are frightened by the protests going on around the United States.

My Project

While we are engaged in distance learning, I will use these multicultural books to read aloud to my student. I will use these books to approach discussions about the need to eliminate racism in the world. The majority of my students are Latinos from Mexican, Central American, and South American backgrounds. I want them to learn about different cultures and to develop an appreciation for differences and similarities. We will have discussions about the books and talk about the things that we can begin doing in our classroom community to combat racism. I will also teach them that they can in turn also have these discussions at home with their families to create awareness of the discrimination and hopefully plant the idea that we can all do our part to stand against racism.
